Thanks to those of you who were kind enough to offer your critique on Jonah 1:1-2 yesterday. Here’s a revised translation (save this for your RDSV):
1 Now the word of YHWH happened to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Get up; go to Nineveh the great city and call out against them because their evil has come up before me.”
Here’s today’s OT text:
And my translation:
3 And Jonah got up to run away to Tarshish from before YHWH, and he went down to Jappa. He found a ship that went to Tarshish, and he paid its fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from before YHWH. 4 But YHWH hurled a strong wind into the sea, and a great windstorm happened on the sea such that the ship threatened (lit., planned or considered) to be destroyed.
Well, Jonah got up… but he didn’t go where he was told.
